1 Year Baby Food Chart: A Daily Meal Plan for 12-Month-Olds
Hoola HealthThe first birthday changes the shape of your child’s day. Food becomes the main event and milk moves to a supporting role — roughly three meals and two snacks, with two or three milk feeds around them.
| Main foods | Grains, vegetables, fruit, dairy, protein |
| Milk | 400–500 ml whole milk a day |
| For weight gain | Ghee, banana, sweet potato, ragi, egg, paneer |
| Still avoid | Whole nuts, whole grapes, added sugar, salty and packaged snacks |

What’s newly allowed at 12 months
Whole cow’s milk — 400 to 500 ml a day is the sweet spot. More than that displaces iron-rich food and is a common cause of low iron in toddlers.
Honey — safe from twelve months onward. Use sparingly; it’s still sugar.
Nuts and seeds — as powder or smooth butter, never whole. Whole nuts remain a choking risk until around four or five.
Citrus and tomato — generally fine now, in normal amounts.
A pinch of salt and mild spices — turmeric, jeera, mild garam masala are fine. Keep salt minimal and skip chilli.
Still worth avoiding: chocolate, packaged biscuits, chips, sugary drinks and anything with artificial colours. There’s no nutritional case for them and they crowd out real food.

The nutrients that matter now
Iron — still the one to watch, especially if milk intake is high. Ragi, dal, egg, spinach, meat.
Calcium — milk, curd, paneer, ragi.
Protein — egg, dal, paneer, chicken, fish.
Healthy fats — ghee, avocado, nut powders. Toddlers need a higher proportion of fat than adults; this is not the age for low-fat anything.
Weight gain foods for 1 year olds
Slower growth in the second year is normal — most toddlers gain far less than they did in the first year. If your child needs support, add calories through density, not quantity:
- Ghee — a teaspoon in khichdi, dal or porridge
- Banana — mashed, or blended into milk
- Sweet potato — steamed or roasted with a little ghee
- Ragi — porridge with milk, high in calcium and iron
- Paneer — soft cubes or grated into khichdi
- Egg — boiled or scrambled, well cooked
- Dry fruit powder — almond, cashew or walnut ground fine and stirred into porridge
- Full-fat curd — plain, never sweetened
Ask a child health professional before you start supplements or high-calorie formulas. Most toddlers who look thin are growing exactly as they should.
Mealtime rules that make life easier
- Cut everything into small pieces, and grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthwise into quarters
- Child sits upright at the table for meals — no eating while walking, running or in a moving car
- Eat together where you can. Toddlers copy
- Serve a small portion and let them ask for more, rather than filling a big plate
- Expect mess. Handling food is how they learn to eat it
- Don’t bargain, bribe or use screens to get food in — it works today and backfires for years
FAQs
What should a 1 year old eat in a day?
Three meals and two snacks covering grains, vegetables, fruit, dairy and protein, plus 400–500 ml of milk.
How much milk should a 1 year old drink?
400 to 500 ml of whole milk a day. Going well beyond that is linked to low iron.
Can I give my 12 month old regular family food?
Yes, in soft, small pieces with minimal salt and no chilli. Cooking one meal for everyone makes life much easier.
Is it normal for my toddler to eat less than before?
Very. Growth slows in the second year and appetite slows with it. Look at the week, not the meal.
When can my child have whole nuts?
Not before around four to five years. Until then, powder or smooth butter only.
